Media in Bangladesh has always been a sector that played a huge role on every generation’s growing up. Since 1971’s war announcement from the Shadhin Bangla Betar Kendro, the media has been a huge part of everyday life. And currently it has shown its existence among the general people, as it can carry current news and information to everyone. On a much positive note, media coverage has improved a lot in Bangladesh over the last couple of years, and so has the accuracy of news coverage.
Television programs are now watched by nearly everyone. It is a common thing for a family to own a television. At the dawn of visual media in Bangladesh, people were solely dependent on Bangladesh Television (BTV) which delivered with broadcasting a lot of classic movies, songs and accurate news coverage. But gradually in the late 1990s and the early 2000s, different Bengali channels came to expand the horizon of Bangladesh media and lighten the burden on BTV. Channels like Channel i, ATN, NTV, and Ekushey TV delivered, and recently a lot of private media based channels are making their way in the media. The news coverage has shown a lot of improvement, as news now nearly travels at a real time speed, and a lot of people are now being interested to become a reporter, correspondent or a worker of these channels. A lot of channels have also dedicated themselves for only to broadcast news, which was inspired by CNN and other international news channels, which has helped the television media to get a global recognition. Specially Independent TV, owned by one of the top companies of the country Beximco Group, has created a culture of real time news with brilliant presentation.
People thought that with the appearance of visual media, radio stations will gradually vanish in thin air. But to spread news in the rural areas, and even among the current generation, radio has been able to involve a lot of people with their organized way of broadcasting and huge range of music. People are still very much interested to listen to radios, as different radio channels have been working their way into the media. Radio Today, Radio Foorti, Radio amaar, Dhaka FM etc. are the leading private radio channels. Bangladesh Betaar is pretty much the radio version of BTV. These channels have helped to increase accuracy on different news and live broadcasts.
Apart from spreading news, the entertainment sector has also been developed. But Bengali movies in the past had underwhelming response from the mass, as with low budget, low graded plot, actors the producers could not do much of it. But nowadays a lot of organizations have helped a lot of movies to be launched, also helped in sponsoring those movies. This resuscitation of Bengali movies was successful, as now Bengali movies are going uphill with intriguing storylines, crucial twists and beautiful cinematography. Movies like Maatir Moyna, Shyamal Chhaya have been able to make their way into Oscar submissions, ranking 75th and 78th respectively, but sadly didn’t make their way into the nominations. But this showed how much the movies have improved.
With time, the media will keep on improving in Bangladesh, and it will play a vital role for the global exposure of the country. It now depends very much on the current and future generation, and their capability of handling the difficult road of media.
