According to a government data, shrimp export has fallen 19% in the last fiscal year while the country earned USD291m in 2015-16 fiscal years. Economic slowdown and fluctuation of exchange rate in Euro zone attributed to the drop of export earnings. Devaluation of Euro against US dollar is also a cause of dropping the export earnings.
In 2013, Bangladsh produce 223,788 tonnes of shrimp which was 3.47% less than that of previous year. In 2014-15 fiscal, the country exported 44,278 tonnes of shrimp while Bangladesh earned USD 510m from this sector in 2015.
Experts said the government should come forward to help shrimp farmers with new initiatives as global completion has been increasing gradually. In Bangladesh, a farmer can produce only 300kg of “black tiger” shrimps in per hector of land while the other countries can produce 2000 kg of shrimps in the same area. That’s why government should focus on “black tigers” shrimps and should bring new modern method in this sector as there is a huge demand of these kinds of shrimps in the global market. The shrimp’s farmers often claim that they face a great difficulty to collect funds from various sources. Moreover, the competitors countries started to produce low cost Vannamei shrimps which are really a threat for Bangladeshi shrimp farmers.
Now we can expect growth in this sector as the government took some steps to revive this sector by taking initiative. The governments already have taken a step to brand the “black tiger in international market. Official confirmed that government would divide the land into clusters and it would also modernize the shrimp cultivation in a large scale.
