Awami League-led government achieved success in electric sector by completing a record numbers of power project across the country though there still have an uncertainty in overcoming of load shedding in future.
No other past government was as successful as the present in this sector. About 3,870 megawatt power has been added by implementing 55 projects during period of this government. In 2006, BNP was able to generate 3,300 megawatt electricity.
Among the successful projects, half is rental plants which generate about 1,921 MV electricity and they will start operation within and next year. But it doesn’t mean a problem as the rental projects were adopted to tackle the temporary situation. There are many big projects which may come into operation within 2015.The government wants to generate another 11,497 MW power within 2013,
Project under Implementation:
The PDB progress report shows that about 36 power projects including half of private sector are under implementation. The government hopes that another 1329 MW of which one third is rental projects will be added within December. Meanwhile the biggest power plant (412 MW) of the government was inaugurated in Haripur.
Khulna 150 MW plant will start its operation this month while Sirajganj 150 MW plant will be upgraded to generate more 75 MW by December. Summit Power will begin a partial generation of power at Meghnaghat 335 MW plant in November. Besides, six rental power companies of which some owned by AL men missed their deadlines may also add 472 MW power by December. Bibiyana phase-Two and three 450 MW power projects would come into operation next year and in 2015 while Bibiyana phase-One is under cancellation. Two large coal-based power projects of Orion group in Khulna and Chittagong having the capacity of 630 MW would start in last year but the company sought permission to replace Chittagong project in Khulna for easy coal transportation. The government approved it and it will start in 2017. Orion will also start its coal based plant at Mawa in 2017.
Indian company Lanco is also seeking permission to shifting its 225 MW project from Bhola to Sirajganj and it would be delayed by at least a year project shifting.
Projects under Tender Progress:
The tenders of five public sector power projects (capacity 1,305 MW) including 14 private sector (capacity 2,669 MW) are under process. There are also two coal based projects and seven other public sector projects including Rampal coal-fired one (1,320 MW) are progressing. All these will generate another 3,435 MW power.
