Gone are the days when garbage was recognized solely as trash. These wastes are now being utilized at their extent with the help of the 3R, reduction, reuse and recycle. An FE report has shown how the government, separated in South and North city corporations Dhaka, can make a better use of garbage. The impoverished people are already making money by selling these stuffs. Mill clients and small traders are already making thousands of bucks by making a better use of these.
The North and South city corporations have assigned 230 million taka and 286.9 million taka for collecting and disposing garbage respectively in 2015-16 fiscal year. But it is quite true that if the wastes are properly reused, the citizens can get the most out of it not only in Dhaka, but throughout the world. More than 70 percent of the wastages contain of food, with minority of plastic, paper, fabric etc.
The worst part is, lack of disposal system has triggered people to dump the wastes in open landfills. This has affected the environment in a negative manner, as the US Environmental Protection Agency has stated that dumping this garbage in the open can produce greenhouse gases, but composing it will negate the gas.
It is now crucial for the government to set up organizations to make a better use of the garbage and wastes. Many private sections are now involved in this job, but a centralized controller should be the puppet master of this disoriented puppet show, and make sure that the poor people who are collecting this garbage are getting proper protective gears to save their health. The organizations should also keep track of where these garbage are being dumped and necessary steps should be taken to recycle them for the greater good.
